This report presents the results of a "rapid assessment" workshop on the environmental effects of biofuel technologies. The workshop, conducted by the International SCOPE Biofuels Project, was held in Gummersbach, Germany, from 22-25, 2008. More than 75 scientists from 21 countries and representing a diversity of disciplines participated in the preparation of this assessment, either in person at Gummersbach, as co-authors or reviewers, or as advisors to the Project. Each of these scientists was chosen by an advisory committee based on their professional standing and their knowledge of some aspect of environmental science, agronomy, or biofuel engineering. All of the participants are excellent scientists, and all generously volunteered their time and expert knowledge for this exercise. We thank them for their effort and for their willingness to participate in the series of lively debates, the contribution of preparatory papers, the prompt and collaborative drafting of cross-cutting chapters, and the thorough and timely revisions of the chapters that led to this report.
