Energy Law (LEn)

On 17 January 2001, in the frame of the Energy Law of 26 June 1998 [1], the Federal Council adopts the SwissEnergy programme [2] which defines the following objectives and targets between 2000 and 2010:

  • reduce the consumption of fossil energy and CO2 emissions by 10%;
  • keep the increase of electricity consumption at a maximum of 5%;
  • stabilize the production of hydro-electricity;
  • increase the share of other renewable energies (+3 TWh for heat production, +0,5 TWh for power generation).

Unlike the EU, Switzerland so far has not set any specific target regarding the introduction of biofuels in the sector of transport. The Energy Law, however, leaves a significant place to freely agreed measures, and it is the responsibility of Canton authorities to take the necessary steps to define the appropriate policies and promote the pathways to reach the objectives.
