Bioethanol plant major boost to UK farmers

The first tanker of sustainably produced bioethanol was dispatched from Europe’s largest wheat bio-refinery on Teeside this week. The Ensus bio-refinery will use 1.2 million tonnes of wheat annually and is expected to meet about a third of the UK renewable transport obligation in 2010/11. The saving in carbon emissions is equivalent to taking 300'000 cars off the road. Alwyn Hughes, Ensus chief executive, said UK farmers had a huge role to play to meet the Government’s green fuel targets. "We are taking in animal feed wheat, of which the UK has a large surplus, and refining it into bioethanol and high protein animal feed", he said, adding: "This is a milestone for UK production of biofuels and a beacon of hope for the burgeoning green industry on Teesside."
